The Vendée Globe races around Antarctica, a landmass about one and a half times the size of the US, which is on average the coldest, windiest, driest, highest continent on earth. Antarctica is managed jointly under the 1961 Antarctic Treaty. Decisions are made by consensus (not by vote), and are then implemented by individual member nations.
